M4 Year

Dr. Loretta Jackson and medical student Mary "Alex" Fratesi chat together in the School of Medicine.

Road to Match

Throughout the fourth year, the SOM Office of Medical Education hosts an informative multi-session program on the different aspects of the residency application and Match system.  Meeting topics include ERAS/Match Overview, Letters of Recommendation, Personal Statements, Curriculum Vitae, and Interviewing, as well as mock interview sessions for practicing interview skills.

Deans Guidance Meeting

Fourth year students individually meet with the School of Medicine deans to discuss long-term goals, application status, career advising, and more throughout the year.  During these meetings, the deans will also compile the student’s Dean’s Letter, a holistic overview of the student from the administration’s perspective that is sent to residency programs.

ERAS/Residency Application

Most residency programs utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) as a means of applicant assessment and review.  In this system, students input their experiences, publications, personal statements, and other application components.  When completed, the application is sent to residency programs that the student selected.  Some residencies use different application systems, for example ophthalmology residency.

NRMP

After residency programs review the students’ applications and complete the interview process with them, both the students and residency programs will rank their preferences using the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).  The NRMP algorithm then matches preferred students with their preferred residencies, with the results being released in the spring on Match Day.

Couples Match

In the NRMP, couples that wish to match into the same geographic location have a means to do so.  Find more information at the Couples in the Match website

M4 Boot Camp

As graduation approaches, the School of Medicine puts on this course to provide a multidisciplinary, integrated approach to allow the student to experience a smooth transition into residency training.  Each student will attend sessions covering general topics for being a physician, as well as training in specific areas related to the chosen field of focus for residency.
